KISS DISCUSSION WITH MY PATRONS

During this episode of the Mars Attacks Podcast, my Patrons join me to discuss the legendary band Kiss.

As with all of these band-centric discussions we talk about the first time hearing the band. Our favorite album by the band. What three tracks we'd use to sell the album to someone? Have we seen them live, and if so favorite memories of seeing them.

This episode of the Mars Attacks Podcast is the audio version of the May 20th, 2022 episode of the Signals From Mars live stream. You can watch the video version of the interview here.

New Releases: May 27, 2022 - Def Leppard

New Releases: May 27, 2022 - Def Leppard

DEF LEPPARD IS BACK WITH ALBUM NUMBER TWELVE

Def Leppard - Diamond Star Halos

Def Leppard is one of the most important bands in the musical soundtrack of my life. Aside from maybe X, I have always found something good on each of their previous albums. There is not a lot going on Diamond Star Halos that really sounds appealing to me.

I get that the band will never sound like they did when Steve Clark, Mutt Lange, and even Pete Willis were in the band. I'm not asking them to, but if you look at what Ghost just did with their album Imperia, you can still be a rock band and bring in outside writers and elements from other types of music and still make it your own, and more importantly rock.

How many albums Def Leppard released?

The band has released 12 albums in 25 years.

Who produced the album?

The band and Ronan McHugh.

What label is the band on?

After years of fighting with Universal, and switching to Sony’s earMusic for the 2015 self-titled album, they’re back on Universal Music Enterprise (UMe).

How many years has Def Leppard been active?

The band first got together in 1977, forty-five years ago.

There are times when I can't figure out what they're doing with this album. Are these B-sides? Are they songs that were put together to appear on some movie soundtrack? Are these leftovers, that due to the pandemic they tried to flesh out and release? Are they a band chasing past glories trying to recapture Hysteria for the millionth time?

When Joe Elliott said this would be a defining album for the band, I thought "wow, it's the one we've been waiting for." But nope, this feels like a band that has run out of ideas. No Def Leppard-like choruses that you want to sing to. No memorable melodies that get stuck in your head. It's all kind of bland. Most of it is mediocre at best, with nothing that's really great either.

I get that they're still trying to chase the fan base that made Hysteria huge. But that vinyl buying, go see several shows on tour die-hard, is still hoping for something that resembles the band's first three albums. When they were remotely a rock band.

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot by the band since then that I have liked. But when the best musician in the band hasn't written a single note on the album, there is a huge problem.

I can't recommend this album to anyone. Will die-hards check it out anyway? Absolutely, and will there be some that say they love it? No doubt, but man, they need to understand that the two main ingredients in Hysteria are no longer around the band. Ballads like "Two Steps Behind" no longer light up the charts. If Tesla's Shock wasn't enough to make you realize that Phil Collen doesn't know how to get a band on the radio, then there isn't much anyone can do to help.

To quote one of my Patrons, the track "Lifeless" best describes the album. The album was produced by the band, and Ronan McHugh, sometimes bands need someone to say "no you can do better." Diamond Star Halos is your perfect example of that.

Here is Def Leppard with the track "Take What You Want" off of their latest album Diamond Star Halos. It is the only song that thinks is decent off of the album.

New Releases: May 20, 2022 - Anvil

New Releases: May 20, 2022 - Anvil

ANVIL IS BACK TO IMPACT YOUR EARS!

ANVIL - IMPACT IS IMMENENT

Nineteen albums in, did anyone think Anvil was going to release a blackened opera concept prog album? Like the name of one of their previous albums, Anvil is Anvil. And that's all there is to it.

Impact Is Imminent is a continuation of everything that's come before it. The band has never been shy about being a heavy metal machine. They don't take themselves 100% serious. All of their albums are full of anthems that touch on weed, sex, your typical heavy metal themes, and downright silliness!

They are your typical band where you don't need to find a new album or song to replace your previous favorite. Impact Is Imminent just helps extend your Anvil playlist. If they haven't done anything for you yet then don't expect this album to do it for you. This is an extension of their legacy. Diehards will lap this album right up!

How many albums have Anvil released?

This is album number nineteen, their first since 2020’s Legal At Last.

Who produced the album?

Marin ‘Mattes’ Peiffer, he has produced U.D.O. as well as Avil’s previous few releases 2016’s Anvil Is Anvil, 2018’s Pounding The Pavement, and 2020’s Legal At Last.

What label is the band on?

The band is currently on AFM records.

How many years has Anvil been active?

The Lips and Robb Reiner first got together in 1973, forty-nine years ago.

Here is Anvil with the track "Take A Lesson" off of their latest album Impact Is Imminent.

New Releases: May 13, 2022 - Graham Bonnet Band

THE LEGENDARY GRAHAM BONNET IS BACK GRAHAM BONNET BAND - DAY OUT IN NOWHERE There aren't many seventy-four-year-old singers still belting out tunes like Graham Bonnet. Robin McAuley was recently asked on Focus On Metal, whose songs are hardest to sing when playing with MSG live. He quickly responded something to the effect of "one of Graham's songs". He mentioned how Graham once told him how he didn't know how to sing any other way.If you're a fan of Rainbow or Michael Schenker's work over the years, you more than likely know Graham's voice. I was lucky enough to interview him, and discuss his entire career a few years back. That was episode 144, which was back when he was promoting the album The Book. Both The Book and Meanwhile, Back In The Garage were strong outings. But does Day Out In Nowhere compare to either? How many albums has he released as the Graham Bonnet Band? This is studio album number three. It is their first album since 2018's Meanwhile, Back In The Garage.Who produced the album?Graham's basssist and partner, Beth-Ami Heavenstone, and returning guitarist Conrado Pesinato co-produced Day Out In Nowhere. What label is the band on? The band's label is Frontiers Records. How many years has Graham been active? The self-titled album by The Marbles came out back in 1970. He's been at it for 52 years!Day Out In Nowhere is a continuation of what Graham has done on his last two Graham Bonnet Band releases. This album features a bunch of different guests on it. Jeff Loomis of Arch Enemy and Nevermore. Brothers John and Mike Tempesta, who are known for their work with The Cult, White Zombie, and Powerman 5000. Finally, Roy Z, is best known for his work with Judas Priest, Halford, and Bruce Dickinson. It is a strong album throughout and will please fans of Graham's previous work. It is an extension of his previous two Graham Bonnet Band albums without copying his legacy or trying to reinvent the wheel. Many people fifty-plus years into their career would be contempt releasing something that remotely sounds like one of their "big songs." Graham is staying in his lane, without being stagnant. If you're a fan, you need to check out Day Out In Nowhere.
