New Releases: April 15, 2022 - Cancer Bats
CANCER BATS RETURN WITH ALBUM NUMBER SIX
CANCER BATS - PSYCHIC JAILBREAK
Cancer Bats has always been a band that has done what they wanted. You want to pigeonhole them into one sub-genre? Well, they'll just chance the questions to all of your answers.
Are they a hardcore band? doom metal? stoner? hard rock? southern rock? Well yes, to any of those, plus almost any other genre you might have to pegged on them.
This is what has always stood out to me about the band, they haven't cared to be anything aside from themselves.
The big question going into the album was would the loss of Scott Middleton affect them in any way? The loss of a founding member can at times be the end of a band as we know it. You can list a ton of bands where this has been an issue. They lose a key component, and they're suddenly off doing something completely different.
But when the album kicks off, you realize Cancer Bats isn't one of these bands. Psychic Jailbreak starts off delivering exactly what you expect from them. And then the album starts to provide you with all of the twists and turns you've come to love from them.
If you're not familiar with the band, this may be a good album for you to check out, and then go back through their catalog.
Here are Cancer Bats with the track "Radiate" off of their latest album Psychic Jailbreak.

New Releases: April 8, 2022 - Black Swan
BLACK SWAN IS BACK WITH ALBUM NUMBER TWO
BLACK SWAN - GENERATION MIND
Frontiers Records loves putting super-groups together. Like most super-groups that come together, most fall short of the expectations.
Black Swan is a band that at least in my mind has always worked. You have four thoroughbred musicians, whose credentials speak for themselves. Robin McAuley is best known for his work with MSG. Reb Beach has worked with Whitesnake, Winger, and Twisted Sister to name a few. Matt Starr has played with Mr. Big and Ace Frehley. While Jeff Pilson has played with Dokken, Dio, and is in Foreigner. He has also produced a lot of other bands over the years.
Instead of being an album where everyone has to show off their talent, and each component is just intent on their own self-promotion, this album works. They sound like a cohesive band that has been writing and recording music with each other for decades. The songs and band don't sound like your generic run-of-the-mill, "checks in the mail" thrown together project.
Robin has such a unique, identifiable voice, after the revolving door of vocalists Michael Schenker has used over the years, there is a reason why he's still identified with the band. He, in my opinion, sang on two of MSG's best albums.
Generation Mind to me is the long-lost fourth McAuley Schenker album. Yes, Robin has recorded several albums in between, a few with Schekner actually. And that's without mentioning the first Black Swan album. But this album shows that he still has that same power, and his melodies are still captivating. They are just as relevant as those MSG albums.
Although Robin really stands out, the entire band shines and makes this album a worthwhile listen.
If you remotely like the musical legacy of these four members of the band, check the album out.

New Releases: April 1, 2022 - Red Hot Chili Peppers
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS RETURN WITH JOHN FRUSCIANTE
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - UNLIMTED LOVE
I have enjoyed quite a bit of the Red Hot Chili Pepper's work over the years, with the Dave Navaro album One Hot Minute being my favorite. I know that a lot of people look past that album, including the band, but it has a lot of great material on it.
With this said, there is no denying that the band has a certain familiarity to it when Anthony Keidis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante get together with Rick Rubin to record an album. As good as Josh Klinghoffer was in the band, you can tell that he was never given the leeway Frusciante received. There is something automatic about the band when you add him to the mix.
Familiar is the operative word when describing Unlimted Love. Is it a bad album? No, not at all, it has some gems on it. But listening to the album I can't help but feel like I've already heard most of this already. Now I know bands do this all the time, for example, Scorpions' latest release Rock Believer.
The difference between the two is that each of the tracks on Rock Believer sound different from one another. While Unlimited Love feels like you're listening to a lot of the same material on an unlimited loop. It reminds me more of Iron Maiden's last few releases where they're taking pieces that have worked in the past and using them on their newer releases.
The album isn't necessarily bad, it just feels like deja vu, we've been here before. And at this point four decades into the band's career it makes you want to reach for albums by the band that you fall in love with them initially.
If you're a fan of the band, there is no doubt you're going to check the album out. If you want to get into the album, I'd recommend looking into any of the albums they released between 1991 and 2002. These albums include Blood Sugar Sex Magik, One Hot Minute, Californication, and By The Way.
