BLACK LABEL SOCIETY ARE BACK WITH DOOM CREW INC.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY - DOOM CREW INC.

One of my Patrons, Mike Jones said it best, B.L.S. if nothing else is consistent. Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society have always been good for at least releasing a few good songs per album. But I feel that around the time he got sober, right before Order Of The Black, Zakk really turned things up a notch.

He's done this twice in my opinion, 1919 Eternal, and The Order Of The Black. While every album after 1919 Eternal had good material on it, after The Order Of The Black, every album has been just downright killer.

Doom Crew Inc. follows this trajectory. The album is solid to top to bottom, and will more than likely please any die-hard Black Label Society fan. Or any Ozzy fan that missed Zakk's playing on Ordinary Man. It has your share of bone-shaking riffs, and cantilevering mellow moments. Essentially what you have come to expect from B.L.S.

New Releases: November 19, 2021 - Khemmis

KHEMMIS RETURNS WITH ALBUM NUMBER FOUR

KHEMMIS - DECEIVER


Based on all of the reviews I've read on this album, the new Khemmis album Deceiver is receiving the Mastodon treatment from the trve and cvlt metal sites. "Oh they were so good when they started off, this is just kind of ok."

So simple, and so dumb. "We want all of our bands to stay the same, we're hurt when they try and evolve". Right, because we all eat the same food every day, we all dress in the same clothes, and we all work the same job we did when we were in high school.

Deceiver takes the band in different directions. Yes, they started out as purely a doom band, but this album sees them mix in some of the more traditional heavy metal aspects they've added to their previous albums. But they've taken things further, actually added ingredients of thrash, and death metal to the mix as well.

The band has progressed a ton beyond their self-titled EP. Their Leviathan ala Mastodon if you will. There are some that will enjoy the album because of the chances they take. While those that clamor for them to just be a doom metal band, will complain no matter what.

New Releases: November 12, 2021 - L.A. Guns

L.A. GUNS ARE BACK TO DISCUSS THEIR CHECKERED PAST

L.A. GUNS - CHECKERED PAST

Three albums into the Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis L.A. Guns reunion, most of us know the difference between this version of L.A. Guns, and Reiley's L.A. Guns. Checkered Past is the third go-round for Guns/Lewis variation of the band. It follows 2019's The Devil You Know, and 2017's The Missing Peace.

L.A. Guns is a band that has always for the most part pleased and entertained me. No matter who is in or out of the lineup, I always find something I like off of all of their releases. Some albums may be stronger than others, but there is still something good to find.

Checkered Past is no different, it follows the solid work the Lewis/Guns tandem has been putting forward on their last two albums. There are plenty of solid tracks on the album. And being someone that isn't a fan of ballads, there are a few, that I don't care for.

I have always argued that the band's debut should be mentioned in the conversation when discussing great albums by bands from L.A. Although their second album, Cocked And Loaded, had "all the hits", the self-titled debut is timeless. The rawness, the energy, and the songs themselves put it over the top for me. I still listen to it all the time and actually don't skip that album's ballad.

Is L.A. Guns' Checkered Past on the level of their debut album? No, not even close for me. But that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy most of the album. Case in point, a lot of the album's tracks are already in my L.A. Guns playlist.

EMIGRATE RETURNS WITH ALBUM NUMBER FOUR

EMIGRATE - THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY

This is album number four by Emigrate. I really love their 2014 released Silent So Long, and 2018's A Million Degrees. They're albums I play all the time, and own on vinyl.

Even their 2007 self-titled release has a bunch of cool tracks. But The Persistence Of Memory falls way short of my expectations from the band.

The album isn't bad at all, and I still prefer Richard Kruspe's side project to his "day job". But I didn't need a millionth and one cover of "Always On My Mind". I also didn't need another version of "Hypothetical", I'm good with the original.

While I feel like other bands really raised their game during the pandemic, most of the songs off of the album are decent but not as great as other things Richard has released under this name.

I do encourage you to check the album out and decide for yourselves.

For years I've been asking Bullet For My Valentine to return to what got me into the band, to begin with. Heavy music, fast music, great riffs, great melodies, great chorus, etc.

I honestly lost interest in the band after Scream Aim And Fire. Not because of clean vocals, but because the band was more worried about competing on your local radio rock playlist. Ballads, radio-friendly tracks, and essentially everything that didn't bring the band on my radar. I like all kinds of music, but what they were releasing was just generic, and not interesting to me.

Similar to what I said about Dee Snider, I wanted Bullet For My Valentine to return to a band that was very heavily influenced by old-school thrash. Well, thirteen years later, their self-titled album delivered what I had been waiting for.

This album is strong top to bottom, really no weak spots. Again, the silver lining for a lot of bands when it comes to the pandemic is being able to work on their music, and put forward the strongest album of their catalog. And the best-sounding album of their catalog.

This is what Bullet For My Valentine by Bullet For My Valentine is. I can easily argue that it's better than Scream Aim And Fire, and The Poison. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.
