Signals From Mars - Episode 315 - Judas Priest Album Discussion

SIGNALS FROM MARS | JUDAS PRIEST ALBUM DISCUSSION

During this episode of Signals From Mars, my Patrons join me to discuss Judas Priest's discography.

The Patrons submitted their top ten Priest albums. Each of them was assigned a set of points based on where they appeared on each Patron's list. If they're ranked number one, they receive 10 points. If they're ranked number two they receive 9 points, all the way down to number ten, which received 1 point.

They also picked a track to represent each album. We also created an Ultimate Judas Priest Playlist based on their selections.

Did your favorite make the list? Should it have ranked higher? What's that album even doing on the list?

SWORD | RICK HUGHES

In this episode of Signals From Mars, we welcome Rick Hughes of the band Sword.

Among the topics discussed include the band's new album III, their first album in 34 years. The process behind making the album. How Rick felt that he had to continuously up his game to match what the rest of the band had done on the album. Touring with the likes of Metallica, Alice Cooper, and Motorhead. And thanks to a heads up from former Radioactive Metal host Roch Vaillancourt, I ask Rick about an incident with a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Signals From Mars - Episode 307 - The New Roses

THE NEW ROSES | TIMMY ROUGH

This episode of Signals From Mars features an interview with Timmy Rough, the singer and guitarist of the German band The New Roses.

Among the topics discussed include the band's new album, Sweet Poison. The diversity of the band's influences. Touring the U.K. after Brexit. The band's connection to the military, and playing for the German military in Afghanistan. Opening for bands such as Kiss, ZZ Top, Scorpions, and Aerosmith (among others). Playing on two editions of the Kiss Kruise, and why COVID-related rules have kept them from being part of this year's Kruise. Bands they'd love to play with. Playing with bands much heavier than them like Slayer. Timmy gives his opinion on whether or not Pantera should get back together and play.

Before wrapping the interview I had to ask about the name. Mainly because I once saw a prominent guitarist say "The New Roses, didn't they know Guns N Roses existed?" So I ask Timmy about it. Hear what he has to say.

In this episode of Signals From Mars, I am joined by Queensrÿche guitarist Michael Wilton.

Among the topics discussed during the interview include the band's new album Digital Noise Alliance. Their current tour with Judas Priest, and the band's setlist. The dynamic between the band and lead singer Todd LaTorre. Has it changed over the years? Michael's go-to gear, including his signature ESP Skull guitar.

Mars Attacks Podcast 300 - The End

THE END | FEATURING JOSHUA TOOMEY AND ANTHONY MACKEY

This episode of the Mars Attacks Podcast is episode 300 of the Mars Attacks Podcast. It is both the 13th anniversary of the podcast and its last show. Thank you for listening and supporting the show thirteen years later.

Joining me for the show are Joshua Toomey of the Talk Toomey Podcast, and one of my Patrons, Anthony Mackey.

The neat thing is that after last week's 1983 discussion with my Patrons I kept thinking, that I'd love to chat with Anthony about his upbringing in music. How things were in Ireland, and see how they differ from my experience. So it was very exciting to see him connect, and be able to carry out this very conversation. Anthony is also a huge fan of King's X, so we chat about their new album Three Sides Of One. We also discuss what his band The Middle Ages is up to.

Joining me for the second part of the show is Joshua Toomey. I've had him on the show several times in the past. It is always fun to catch up with him. Although I've never met him in person, seeing him get the gig with Knotfest was beyond cool for me. As I mention during the show, it was one of the boys, one of the good guys, getting the opportunity.

New Releases: August 26, 2022 - Machine Head

New Releases: August 26, 2022 - Machine Head

MACHINE HEAD CHAPTER THREE

MACHINE HEAD - OF KINGDOM AND CROWN

Machine Head is a band that has put out some important albums throughout their career. Not only important albums when it comes to the band, but landmark albums that helped metal evolve. Albums like Burn My Eyes, and The Blackening have helped cement the Robb Flynn lead band as of the most important metal bands of all time.

Way back when I remember Blitz and D.D. from Overkill being a local metal show hosted by Eddie Trunk. They had asked a group of artists that were there that night who the next big band would be. Without hesitation, both of them said Machine Head and pointed to Burn My Eyes as the reason why.

I moved from New Jersey to Northern Spain in late 2003. At that time I started getting into the local music scene. There were two bands that most of the up-and-coming bands were emulating. They were Kyuss and Machine Head.

I have also seen them be the second or third band down from the headliner at a festival, and absolutely destroy every other band on the bill. Didn't matter how much bigger the band was, they were there to make a statement and show people that there were now able to shoulder the load.

The flip side is seeing them get booed and insulted by the crowd for not playing "Davidian" in Madrid. As well as why I mention this is Machine Head chapter three. As much as Burn My Eyes and The Blackening have elated fans, and been influential landmark albums, there are two albums, The Burning Red, and Catharsis, that have really pissed people off.

I am typically more forgiving than most and will find things off of albums that I can appreciate and listen to. When The Burning Red was released, more people were hung up on Robb Flynn wearing a tracksuit and his hairstyle, than actually giving the album a chance. It was cool to hate Nu Metal, and this was their supposed foray into that sub-genre.

Although Through The Ashes Of Empires started to help turn things around for the band, The Blackening is the album a lot of die-hards were waiting for. It also opened the band up to a new generation of listeners. Let's be honest, the album bridged a lot of things, mixing a ton of influences. Kind of bringing together the old and the new. Not only with the band, but bridging from Priest and Maiden to Metallica and Pantera. The latter with the anthem "Aesthetics Of Hate". It was a giant middle finger from the metal community to the supposed journalist that had said Dime was asking for it.

Things were fine, and the band released a series of albums that helped maintain their popularity. And then Catharsis happened. Similar to The Burning Red, a lot of people were turned off by the album because of what people around them said. They did this once again, instead of actually checking the album out. "Oh, the lyrics are too woke, what happened to my Machine Head" or the classic "stick to music and forget the politics." You know because "Davidian" was written about a car or a sports team.

A lot of other things played into people's hate for the album. Robb Flynn calling Phil Anselmo a racist was a hot topic for a while. This divided metal heads, they had to pick sides, because their friends and the press said so. Then you had Phil Demmel and Dave McClain's departure from the band. Again, for some reason, people just felt the need to pick sides.

I've never understood this, you need to pick between Sepultura and Soulfly, you need to pick between Phil and Dime, you need to pick between Ozzy, Dio, and Sabbath. it's all made-up insanity from some guy sitting in his bedroom on a computer dictating what you're supposed to do, and not do. Because you can't like all of those bands? Your life ultimately has nothing to do with the internal strife within a band. If we disliked bands just because someone was a jerk to someone else, then we wouldn't listen to any music at all.

Rock started out as a form of rebellion. Metal poured gasoline on the fire, and turned things up a million notches. That's why we've always been the outcasts, that don't give a fuck what you say, because we're going to do what we want to do. Oh, unless you change your hair, and try something different in your music, then you suck, and you can't be part of our club.

How does that make sense? For a form of art that started out as rebelling against the system, a lot of people out there want to tell you what metal is, and isn't. How you need to dress the part. How you should wear your hair, or what uniform to put on in order to fit in.

Wow, so for a lot of elitists that bag on glam metal, nu metal, or any wave of metal that they don't think fits the supposed rules, looks like you're more conservative, and more about oppressing people than those that are supposedly oppressing you. Do as I say, not as I do, right?

How many albums have Machine Head released?

This is album number ten, their first since 2018’s Catharsis.

Who produced the album?

Robb Flynn and Zack Ohren, have produced Of Kingdom And Country.

What label is the band on?

The band is currently on Nuclear Blast and Imperium.

How many years has Machine Head been active?

Robb Flynn formed the band over thirty years ago, in 1991.

Chapter three, Catharsis did not go over well at all. Call it a Robb Flynn solo album, but let's be honest, aren't they all? He's still the captain steering the ship. Sure people come into the band, and write music with and for him. But he, like Dave Mustaine, Ozzy Osbourne, Trent Reznor, Gene, and Paul, or any other artist you peg as the main people behind an act, Robb has the final say in everything. That's not to diminish any of the players that have entered the band along the way. But consider this, Logan Mader once told me how if he was still in the band by The Burning Red, he would have had to follow what Robb wanted. And he would have had no issue cutting his hair or wearing anything he would have been asked to wear.

A lot of fans had written Machine Head off. No way the band can pull out of a perceived nose dive for the third time. But guess what, "this is your captain speaking, we've just hit a bunch of nasty turbulence, but we're out of it for now. Oh and here's Of Kingdom And Country."

I have to admit, hearing that the album would be conceptual, and based on the anime series Attack On Titan left me pretty skeptical. But what did we learn about the pandemic? The silver lining where bands have been able to write and make albums that are arguably among their best. Of King And Country is on the same level as Burn My Eyes and The Blackening. They have completed their holy trinity. Robb Flynn has brought in the right players needed to pull off his vision for the band to move forward. I'm sure his Twitch show has helped appease the band's fans. But, by going back and playing all eras of the band live, entire albums, has surely helped put Of King And Country together.

If you're a fan that was scared to go back in the water, chances are you're going to really like Of King And Country by Machine Head. If you're new to the band, this could also be a great jumping-on point to check out the band.

Here is Machine Head with the track "No Gods, No Masters" off of their latest album Of King And Country.

New Releases: August 19, 2022 - Spirit Adrift

New Releases: August 19, 2022 - Spirit Adrift

SPIRIT ADRIFT FOCUS ON THE 20 CENTURIES GONE

SPIRIT ADRIFT - 20 CENTURIES GONE

Spirit Adrift is a band that was started by Nate Garrett back in 2015. I have been following them for some time, and have always marveled at how it was Nate playing the majority of the instruments on the albums. They are one of the bands that I point to when people ask me about new bands that are worth following.

How many albums have Spirit Adrift released?

This is album number five, their first since 2020’s Enlightened In Eternity.

What label is the band on?

The band is currently on 20 Buck Spin in the US and Century Media for the rest of the world.

How many years has Spirit Adrift been active?

Nate Garrett, who is the only permanent member of the band, started Spirit Adrift in 2015.

20 Centuries Gone contains two new songs and six cover songs. Just to show how they can't be pigeon-holed into one form of metal, they have chosen to cover a diverse bunch of songs. You'll find covers of classic tracks that were originally written and recorded by Type O Negative, Pantera, Metallica, Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top, and Lynyrd Skynyrd

Let's be honest, you probably know at least some of these tracks. But, for a kid getting into hard rock or metal, this album can be the gateway into some of the artists they're covering. It reminds me in a way of what Metallica has done with covers over the years. You can definitely hear the original, but it also sounds like Spirit Adrift. This could also work in the other direction were fans of these bands decide to give Spirit Adrift a shot because they've covered one of their all-time favorites.

Give the album a spin if you think you fit either one of those categories or want to turn your kids onto a younger band, or if you're a kid but none of your music convinces your folks. Spirit Adrift could help bridge the gap!

Here is Spirt Adrift with the track "Mass Formation Psychosis" off of their latest album 20 Centuries Gone.

New Releases: August 12, 2022 - Arch Enemy

New Releases: August 12, 2022 - Arch Enemy

ARCH ENEMY RETURNS WITH DECEIVERS

ARCH ENEMY - DECEIVERS

Arch Enemy has been at the forefront of metal for some time now. They're one of those bands that you're used to seeing at festivals, with their logo being one of the biggest to appear in the line-up. If you're a fan of the band or metal in general, you know how important and groundbreaking the switch from Johan Liiva to Angela Gossow was.

This was the first time that a female singer was predominantly showcased that was using guttural vocals. It helped spawn plenty of others such as the band's current singer Alissa White-Gluz. The thing was Alissa was also known for her soaring clean vocals, as can be heard from her work with The Agonist and Kamelot among others. So all of these years we wondered, would Michael want to add her other talents to Arch Enemy's music?

The other knock was you have Jeff Loomis in the band, and he isn't writing a single note on an album? Here's a guy that arguably has a bigger signature model than the band's leader. He's known for his work in Nevermore, regarded as one of the best metal guitarists of the last few decades, yet you have him in the corner like Vivian Campbell?

The single "Hand Shake With Hell" was released, and finally, Alissa was doing something different on the track. But what about the rest of the album?

How many albums have Arch Enemy released?

This is album number eleven, their first since 2017’s Will To Power.

Who produced the album?

The album was produced by Jacob Hansen.

What label is the band on?

The band is currently on Century Media.

How many years has Arch Enemy been active?

The band has been together since 1995.

That would be a resounding no. Aside from the next to last track on the album "One Last Time", there is no clean singing on the rest of the album. Something that several long-time fans of the band that I know were hoping the band would do. I would go so far as to mention that a well-known guitarist has told me that he wished that they had done more to break their formula. His quote was "we've heard it all before angry verse, happy chorus."

To play devil's advocate, this is still Michael Amott's band. That formula has been working for quite some time now and has helped propel the band to where they are in the grand scheme of things. It's helped pay for many a meal, among other things. So why change that now? Plus if you want clean singing, he could easily say, check out Spiritual Beggers!

As alluded to above, the band really hasn't strayed from what's made them popular. If you're a die-hard you'll enjoy the album. If you're a casual fan, then you may feel like you've heard all of this before. Either way, check the album out and make up your own mind if any of these tracks slots into your Arch Enemy playlist.
