New Releases: September 24, 2021 - Poppy A Pale Horse Named Death

POPPY IS BACK WITH FLUX

Poppy - Flux

I've never been one to look over my shoulder when talking about music. I've never cared whether someone thinks I have no metal cred because I like music outside of hard rock and metal. Or if something that is outside of the box, a little more commercial, or mixed with something else. I'm not one of these curmudgeon supposed experts that have to go by a million rules as to what's metal or not in 2021. You like what you like, and that's it.

Flux by Poppy mixes a lot of things that I enjoy. There are parts of the album that are pure 90s alternative rock in the vein of a band like Garbage or Hole. While there are tracks that are callbacks to legends like Kate Bush or Siouxsie Sioux. The delivery in the vocals may not be the same, but the music is heavily influenced by what those artists have done in the past. Poppy makes the tracks, regardless of the influence work.

You can argue that that Flux isn't as heavy as her previous three albums. But there is plenty of guitars, distorted music, screams, and guttural vocals to remind people that they're still listening to Poppy.

This album won't be for everyone that comes to this site to check out my new releases post. I get that but do think that if you listen to the album with an open mind that you might just get into it. It is 32 minutes of entertaining music, that has very few low points.

A Pale Horse Named Death Infernum In Terra

SAL ABRUSCATO RETURNS WITH ALBUM NUMBER 4 BY A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH

A Pale Horse Named Death - Infernum In Terra

I've been a fan of Sal Abruscato since the first Life Of Agony album. One of the coolest things as a drummer that has  tried to "write" their own music, is finding another drummer that also composes their own songs. The stigma has always been "you're just a drummer, you just need to play what we tell you." As if not drummers can actually write music?

When word came down that Sal was switching from drums to guitar and vocals, I was obviously intrigued. So I was quick to check out the band's first album And Hell Will Follow Me as soon as the promo was sent my way.

A Pale Horse Named Death is now four albums deep. If you don't know by now, the band's music sounds nothing like Life Of Agony. But you could draw certain parallels to music that influenced his other previous band Type O Negative.

I've often discussed how one band may not influence another directly, but  how they both drink from the same well of inspiration. I mention this because people are going to point out that he does not sound like Peter Steele, or offer up certain things they did as a band.

And although Metallica and Megadeth were initially both playing thrash, doesn't mean they both didn't do it there own way. Which is what Sal is doing with his band.

Anything that is remotely doom metal or has gothic influences will always pull from things like Black Sabbath or even Paradise Lost, who really perfected a mix of the two. Type O Negative took things further, and put their own spin on things. Well much like that, Sal is further exploring this territory on Infernum In Terra, and pushing A Pale Horse Called Death further down this road, his way.

If you're a fan of the band's previous work, you'll love this album. It has everything you're looking for from them. With a few twists and turns that you may or may not expect.

Mars Attacks Podcast 237 - Judas Priest Discussion

MY PATRONS JOIN ME TO DISCUSS JUDAS PRIEST

During this week's episode of the Mars Attacks Podcast, I welcome my Patrons to the show for a new band discussion on Judas Priest.

Judas Priest is out celebrating their fifty-plus years in rock and metal. They have never shied away from being called a Metal band! They are the Metal Gods after all! In my opinion, they were the first pure metal band, that removed the blues from their music and set fire to it. Giving us so many great songs that form part of the soundtrack of our lives.

The Patrons and I discuss our first memories of the band. What our favorite album by the band is. Three tracks off of that album that we would pick to sell the album to someone else. And finally seeing the band live. Since we have people that are all over the world, and of different age groups, the opinions and experiences vary.

To me as the host, it is just cool to sit down and talk with other music fans about such a great band.

New Releases: September 17, 2021 - Edge Of Paradise

EDGE OF PARADISE JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN

Edge Of Paradise - The Unknown

Edge Of Paradise is a band that I've known of since first interviewing lead singer Margarita Monet. That was way back in December of 2011, when they were promoting Mask. In a recent interview with Margarita, she let me know that they've actually pulled that album from streaming services. The reason for this is that she had no involvement in composing the tracks that appeared on Mask. The band's sound has also changed drastically. As a result, it is the album they least identify with.

RELATED: Check out my recent interview with Edge Of Paradise's Margarita Monet here.

I get that record companies have to put labels on their artists for marketing purposes. But I've never understood why Edge Of Paradise has been grouped in with bands like Within Temptation, Nightwish, and others that are considered "symphonic metal".

Why is this term used when discussing the band? Is it because they have a female lead singer? You can draw a distinction between Arch Enemy, Doro, Chastain and these bands, but not Edge Of Paradise?

To me they have always set themselves apart from these other bands because of the fact that Margarita's voice is so unique. Couple that with the way she and Dave Bates take on the composition of the band's music, and there is no comparison. At least to me.

The Unknown is a continuation of what the band had done on their previous album Universe. The album is full of earworm melodies that end up taking up space in your head for days. The songs are very well put together, and the band compliments one another extremely well.

As powerful and awesome as Margarita's voice may be, without the music behind her, the songs just wouldn't work. Credit the production team for making sure that this album strikes you sonically, and with precise precision. Everything on The Unknown is done with purpose.

As solid as I thought Universe was, The Unknown may arguably be a stronger album top to bottom. If you have never heard of the band, or are looking for something to check out this weekend, this may be the album for you.

Here is Edge Of Paradise with the "My Method Your Madness" off of their latest album The Unknown.

I have always been a student of the game, pivoting whenever I thought necessary. This is what lead me to start live streaming again after so many years.

Over the last few weeks, I have been looking at how to grow my audience and noticed that a lot of celebrities are doing an ask the host type of show. Not to say that I'm a celebrity, but I thought it would be an interesting concept to try out. The results were better than I expected.

New Releases: September 10, 2021 - Metallica

New Releases: September 10, 2021 - Metallica

THIRTY YEARS OF METALLICA'S SELF TITLED ALBUM

Metallica - Metallica

The bigger you are, the more people will complain about you. That means the more popular you are, the more people will hate you. "The Black Album" or Metallica by Metallica, is the biggest metal album of all time. You can debate this all you want, but it is the biggest selling album since the early 90s and continues to move thousands of units to this day. I often hear "who's just finding out about this album now?" How about people like my kids that are 8 and 10 listening to some of these songs for the first time now. And adding the album, or songs off of it to their regular rotation.

Conversely you could also argue that this album has been the gateway for millions of  musicians over the last thirty years to pick up an instrument. Whether they want to admit it or not, or if they have since discovered any other album in their catalog and replaced "The Black Album" as their favorite.

I have been listening to the band's podcast about the album, and  thoroughly enjoying it. There a lot of amazing introspective stories that are discussed, from why ...And Justice For All sounds the way it does. How both albums were recorded in the same exact studio. To them not wanting to accept Bob Rock initially. It's a pretty cool listen if you're into music documentaries.

Whether you like this album or not, it changed the landscape of what ended up on rock based radio stations. Before "Enter Sandman" blew up, you hardly heard anything remotely hard rock on the radio, except for a few songs by maybe Guns N Roses, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne,  Judas Priest, Van Halen, Aerosmith,  Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC.

Once "The Black Album" blew up, the floodgates opened. We started to hear songs by Kiss, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and others. It also ushered in a long forgotten era where bands like Faith No More, Sevendust, Korn, Godsmack, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Limp Bizkit, and others that rose to the top in the 90s on rock radio. You no longer had to stay up for a metal show or after 10 to hear these bands as you did in the past. Metallica by Metallica changed the musical landscape of terrestrial radio. You could also argue that this album had as much to do with fourth generation glam/hair metal bands going away.

Over the years, I've heard people say "this is the album where Metallica sold out". Especially when it is mentioned that it's the biggest selling album of the Soundscan era. I've always thought that this is the wrong attitude to take. You could easily say "it's not my favorite album by the band, but I'd prefer it be this album than say Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, or Michael Jackson." Or if you're a die-hard that's only waiting for Master Of Puppets II, would you prefer to listen to Thriller over this album?

People are very selective in their judgement of things. So Metallica sold out because of what "Nothing Else Matters" and "The Unforgiven"? I've never heard anyone say Testament sold out because of "Return To Serenity" which came out after. I've heard people say Anthrax sold out because of "Black Lodge", but I've never heard anyone say Metallica sold out with "Fade To Black". For that matter, I've never heard anyone say Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, or Black Sabbath sold out for putting ballads on albums way before Metallica did it.

This circles back to my opening statement. The more popular you are, the more people complain. The more fanboys of other bands turn their nose up at you, while they're giving their favorite bands a pass.

For everything people have done to crap on the band, their boxed sets have always been amazing. Below you have links to the boxed set on both Spotify and Apple Music. If you choose to pick the album up, please use the Amazon Affiliate links below.

Thank you Metallica for being part of the soundtrack of my life.

THE RETURN OF IRON MAIDEN

Iron Maiden - Senjutsu

I have always said my two favorite bands of all time are Kiss and Iron Maiden. Although I love these bands, I am also hyper-critical of them as well. I was not a fan of the band's last album Book Of Souls. The songs were way too long for me, and for the first time ever, Iron Maiden started borrowing riffs, and melodies from their past. And not just in one song to pay homage to their past, it was all over the album. Couple that with singing about monkeys climbing trees, to me it was like going to a serious news outlet looking for the punchline to a joke.

The band had obviously for the first time cut and pasted a lot of things on the album, like for example "Empire Of The Clouds". At least it was the first time it became apparent. This is something the band scoffed at back in the 80s about not needing to do. They made fun of bands that needed to punch in to record various segments of their guitar solos. They claimed it was something they never needed to do. Yet, Adrian Smith has copped to the fact that indeed they have done that on this new album. I find this to be very hypocritical. Pass judgment on someone when it suits you, but doing exactly what you're saying is wrong, also when it suits you.

I do like this album much more than Book Of Souls. It feels more original, with a slight nod to the past, which is fine, so long as it isn't all over the place. But this album also reminds me of A Matter Of Life And Death. In the sense that there isn't one song that really jumps out at me instantly. That album took me several listens to really get into, but there are tracks off of that album that I still play today.

"Stratego" and "Days Of Future Past" are probably the two that jump out at me the most. They're the closest thing you'll find to classic Maiden on the album. I don't expect anything off of this album to replace "Revelations" or "Drifter" or any of the other classics that I still play to death. But a track like "Coming Home" off of Final Frontier has slotted nicely into my Iron Maiden playlist. And maybe after a few months, more songs off of this album will also make it into my Maiden rotation.

What sticks out at me right away about this album is it is too long. Length doesn't equal prog to me, it never has. There is a fine line between knowing when to add "Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner", to give an album that knockout blow. And just having an album full of "To Tame A Land". Both tracks worked on their respective albums because you had other tracks to balance them out.

Now we're just opening an entire jar of pepper and dumping the entire contents of the condiment on a steak. Where in the past it was lightly sprinkled on. With the band trying to flavor things just right.

Bruce Dickinson recently talked about how people were going to listen to this and say something to the effect of "is that Iron Maiden or the Moody Blues". Why would I want to hear that in Iron Maiden? Why would I look to Iron Maiden to be Wishbone Ash? Why would I want them to be Marillion? If I want to hear those bands, I'll just listen to those bands.

Bruce's voice is brick-walled on certain tracks. It makes it sound as if his voice is blown in places, while it's fine in others. Back to my pepper comment from above. Why was there balance on those classic Maiden albums? I'm starting to think Martin Birch had a lot more to do with the band being who they are than maybe they realize. Bruce recently talked about Metallica's Black Album, and how as good as the album is, they could never work with a structured producer like Bob Rock. And therein lies at least to me as a fan, Iron Maiden's problem.

This statement by Bruce demonstrates that Kevin Shirley is little more than someone recording the band. A yes man that does whatever the band wants. Is Bruce now telling us that Martin Birch never told them "that bit is rubbish, let's get rid of it"? He never chimed in and gave the band direction? He did this with Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath, but not Iron Maiden?

I have been saying for years that I'd love them to work with Andy Sneap or Nick Raskulinecz. Why? Because both producers have been able to capture bands like Rush, Testament, and Judas Priest sonically better than anyone else has been able to do in years. They have also been able to work with the bands to right their ships and get them exactly where they need to be.

I love the band, but after Brave New World they've been very hit and miss for me. They have released some great songs, but a lot of boring long ones as well. And people that love this band, with blinders on, and accept everything they release or say, you can't criticize Metallica for releasing songs that are too long, and then give Maiden a pass.

Ultimately, listen to the album, and decide for yourself. The album isn't bad, but it's kind of more of the same as we've come to expect from the band. I have no problem with a long song here and there, but every song having to be "1812 Overture" is a bit much for me. To me, it is no different than an instrumental guitarist just soloing on a track for several minutes straight. After all, it's what they're doing on a lot of these tracks. Non-critical fans will still lap this album up.

If you're a fan of the band you obviously need to check the album out.

Bokassa - Molotov Rocktail

Bokassa is a Norwegian band. Molotov Rocktail is the band's third album and their first on Napalm Records. The band mixes aspects of stoner rock, catchy melodies, elements of sludgy thick guitars, and at times post-rockesque vocals. If you love Scandinavian hard rock like Turbonegro, The Hellacopters, D.A.D., and such, this is an album I recommend checking out.
