RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS RETURN WITH JOHN FRUSCIANTE

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - UNLIMTED LOVE

I have enjoyed quite a bit of the Red Hot Chili Pepper's work over the years, with the Dave Navaro album One Hot Minute being my favorite. I know that a lot of people look past that album, including the band, but it has a lot of great material on it.

With this said, there is no denying that the band has a certain familiarity to it when Anthony Keidis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante get together with Rick Rubin to record an album. As good as Josh Klinghoffer was in the band, you can tell that he was never given the leeway Frusciante received. There is something automatic about the band when you add him to the mix.

Familiar is the operative word when describing Unlimted Love. Is it a bad album? No, not at all, it has some gems on it. But listening to the album I can't help but feel like I've already heard most of this already. Now I know bands do this all the time, for example, Scorpions' latest release Rock Believer.

The difference between the two is that each of the tracks on Rock Believer sound different from one another. While Unlimited Love feels like you're listening to a lot of the same material on an unlimited loop. It reminds me more of Iron Maiden's last few releases where they're taking pieces that have worked in the past and using them on their newer releases.

The album isn't necessarily bad, it just feels like deja vu, we've been here before. And at this point four decades into the band's career it makes you want to reach for albums by the band that you fall in love with them initially.

If you're a fan of the band, there is no doubt you're going to check the album out. If you want to get into the album, I'd recommend looking into any of the albums they released between 1991 and 2002. These albums include Blood Sugar Sex Magik, One Hot Minute, Californication, and By The Way.
