New Releases: February 25, 2022 - Scorpions

SCORPIONS ARE FINALLY BACK!

SCORPIONS - ROCK BELIEVER

I am the first to admit that I was not a huge fan of Scorpions' last two releases, Sting In The Tail and Return To Forever. I felt they were pretty generic, and kind of paint by numbers. I absolutely loved Unbreakable and Humanity: Hour I, I still listen to tracks off of both. They were heavier, and reminded me of a mix of Scorpions of old, with a flair for the new. They had something I could sink my teeth into.

So going into Rock Believer, I had my fingers crossed. Since Mikkey Dee was working with them on the album, I hoped that his influence would help right the ship. Scorpions have had many members over the years, very influential players while in the band, but they've never had someone like Mikkey join the band. His reputation speaks for itself, Motorhead, King Diamond, and Don Dokken to name a few of the luminaries he's played with.

I received the promo a few weeks back, and I've been playing it quite a bit over the course of the last few weeks. This, in my honest opinion, is the strongest album since 1988's Savage Amusement. Are they reinventing the wheel or doing anything different? No, but it's a flat-out entertaining hard rock album. There is one ballad, and it's there for a reason, not just because they're looking for the next radio hit. 

As much as the previous two albums tried to sound like Love At First Sting and Blackout, Rock Believer has tracks that feel as if they could have come from previous eras of the band. Instead of trying to sound like "Still Loving You" or "Winds Of Change", you have songs that sound like "China White", or "Hit Between The Eyes". Lesser-known classics, that kick major ass. It's one really good song after another.

This album is end-of-year list material for me. It was from the moment I first heard it. If you're a fan of Scorpions, you need to check this album out. If you're a hard rock fan that's looking for something new to check out, do yourself a favor and give Rock Believer a spin.

New Releases: February 18, 2022 - The Birthday Massacre

BECOME FASCINATED BY THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE

The Birthday Massacre - Fascination


The Canadian band The Birthday Massacre is back with their eighth studio album. I have always been a  sucker for their mix guitars, synths, and their lead singer Chibi's vocals.

My first introduction to the band was 2010's Pins And Needles. One of those nights when you're on YouTube, and a suggestion comes on. It happened to be "In The Dark", and as a lot of you can relate, I ended up going down The Birthday Massacre rabbit hole!

The band has never been about inventing anything new, but how they approach what they do is interesting to me. They mesh a lot of things from the 80s, and 90s, and make it their own.

I've seen criticism about the album being unoriginal, or too easy, but it follows what the band has always done. They have a set of ingredients, and they vary their recipe enough to keep me hooked.

Fascination instantly offers a combination of haunting music, with infectious melodies. They have always entertained me, and continue to do so.

I have also seen people knock the mix, sorry folks if you're listening on cheap headphones, and can't hear the entire range of music on the album, that's on you, not the band.

If you've never heard the band before, I would recommend the album to anyone that's into a mix of heavy synths, shimmering and heavy guitars, with 80s sounding drums, as well as great melodies that will be taking up space in your head for days.

Dagoba - By Night


The French band has been through a lot of changes over the years. But the one constant has always been lead singer Shawter.

By Night is the band's eighth album. It features the band's new drummer Theo, and new bass player Kawa Koshigero. It is guitarist Richard De Mello's second album with the band.

By Night is a very solid album top to bottom. The band incorporates a more polished approach to the album. You could argue that there are some pop elements that have not been present in the band's previous albums. But, are more common in other metal bands.

The album is an easy listen and is done before you know it. I found it really entertaining, and recommend it to anyone that has never heard the band before.

Zeal & Ardor is a band that has received a ton of press these last few years. This is thanks to main man Manuel Gagneux's brand of metal. He's been able to captivate many, and get the band on some impressive tours. So much so that you have all of your usual suspects that tend to avoid metal altogether are reviewing the album.

The album shows off the band's various influences. And they cover a lot of ground. For example, black metal, instrumental metal, jazz, gospel, soul, and finally industrial metal. This album takes Zeal & Ardor to the next level and makes Gagneux this decade's Trent Reznor, and Prince. A master of taking a hodgepodge of different ingredients, and making something entertaining out of it.

The album is made up of fourteen tracks, the longest track is almost five minutes. It's as if they were taking the opposite approach to Iron Maiden when it came to songwriting! Most of the tracks are around three minutes long. It's an easy forty-four-minute listen.

If you're a fan of Nine Inch Nails, Code Orange, or previous work by the band, I definitely recommend you check the album out.

KORN - REQUIEM


Korn has finally released their new album Requiem. The recurring theme I have been discussing during the pandemic is that it has allowed bands to spend more time composing and honing in on the best-sounding album possible. Members of Korn have admitted to having additional time to put Requiem together, due to the fact that they could not go out on tour. Thus focusing more energy than usual on the album.

This is the first album without Fieldy, who announced his hiatus from the band some time ago. There is no word as to when or if he'll return to the band. As much as I like the album, I do think it is missing what Fieldy brings to the table. Sure, they've used his demo parts in the songs, but there is just that deviant ingredient missing. It's like when Head was not in the band. Most of the music was good, but you could tell, had he been around it would have catapulted certain songs over the top.

If Fieldy was present, I would gamble to think that the bass would be pushed a little more forward in the mix. I would also think the playing would be a little more intricate.

Requiem is a very good album, it continues the band's second wind in their career. Which in my opinion started with the album The Serenity In Suffering, and continued with Nothing. Diehards are going to want to check the album out. It is a little over half an hour-long, and a very easy listen.

And if you're not into the album, just know that they're already writing the follow-up!
