Jerry Cantrell - Brighten
Back in the 90s Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell released two solo albums. Two great solo albums, Boggy Depot and Degradation Trip. The latter was expanded to Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2. People wonder why Cantrell resurrected the Alice In Chains name? Look no further than his great solo work that for the most part flew under the radar.
Brighten is Cantrell's first solo album in 19 years. It is the first album he's released on his own without a label behind him. It features such guests as Duff McKagen, Greg Puciato, and Tyler Bates.
While his first two solo albums make you feel his angst, desperation, and need to prove a point. Letting people know exactly who he is, and what he's capable of. Brighten is something completely different.
On Brighten, Cantrell offers up a more laid-back approach. Sure it's him, and you're hearing things he's dabbled in previously. But it's done in a way that doesn't make you say Alice In Chains. It's a much lighter album and shows you a different side of what he's capable of.
If you're looking for something that falls in line with Cantrell's previous work, this may not win you over on the first listen. But if you're a fan, and just want to check the album out, I consider it a grower that should be listened to several times to appreciate.

Mastodon - Hushed And Grim
If you've followed me, you'll know that I've defended Mastodon plenty from the I want Leviathan II crowd. Although I enjoyed some of the band's material, and owned Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye is the album that really made me fall in love with the band.
Hushed And Grim continues a lot of what they've done post Blood Mountain. The mix of melodies, and harshness, coupled with 70s rock, and their brand of eclectic prog.
The Leviathan II crowd will no doubt continue to pine for the old days. But the album is solid top to bottom.
It pushes boundaries while firmly remaining purely Mastodon. The best example of this is "Had It All" which could be considered a ballad. But it's done in a way that works within the band's parameters.
If you've been into albums like Crack The Skye, The Hunter, Once More 'Round The Sun, or Emperor Of Sand, you'll more than likely be into Hushed And Grim as well.

Lucifer - Lucifer IV
If you've been remotely a fan of Lucifer in the past, then nothing on this album will surprise you. The band established their sound and the visual themes with their formation. When Nicke Andersson joined the band, he just poured more gasoline on an already raging fire.
Since then, they have continued to do what they do best, which is retro 70s sounds and imagery. Lead singer Johanna Sadonis leads the way with her mix of haunting yet mesmerizing melodies and lyrics.
The band isn't doing anything new, but it's still entertaining. The album is strong front to back.

Armored Saint - Symbol Of Salvation Live
For those keeping score, you know that I don't tend to feature live albums in my new releases posts. Yes, I list them but I don't tend to do a write-up about them unless I think they're really good.
I'm also not going to lie, John Bush and Joey Vera are two of the people I have enjoyed interviewing the most over the years. Their music has always been a big part of the soundtrack of my life, thanks to the album Symbol Of Salvation.
When I saw that the band would be releasing a live version of this album I instantly wanted to check it out. The band has seldomly let me down in the past, if ever. But a lot of bands tend to mail in live albums, and make you think why bother? You can tell it was just a paycheck for a lot of them.
I was lucky enough to have a screener of the DVD/Blu-Ray sent to me to check out. I instantly got goosebumps when "Reign Of Fire" started up. And that continued while watching the entire show.
Call me an old bastard, but when I listen to a live album, and yeah I know not every album I'm going to mention is truly live, but I want it to give me chills like Kiss Alive! and Alive II, Iron Maiden's Live After Death, UFO's Strangers In The Night, Scorpions World Wide Live, Ozzy's Tribute, Metallica's Live Shit..Binge And Purge, etc. These albums were full of energy, they made you want to be at the show. And in some instances choose the live versions of songs over the original studio albums.
Most newer live albums don't do that because they're missing that energy, that it factor that makes them special. Even some of the bands listed above. Some of their newer live albums sound too overproduced and stale.
If you get to watch Symbol Of Salvation Live, you'll see there is no pyro, no over-the-top props on stage, it's just the band ripping through one of their most important albums. It sounds sonically great and looks fantastic. Vince Edwards and Stephanie Cabral did an amazing job capturing the band live.
I've listened to Symbol Of Salvation a lot over the years, but with the advent of being able to create digital playlists, you tend to only listen to the songs you enjoy the most. So I had not listened to the album in its entirety in a while. There were many times during the show that I kept thinking "oh shit, this one is on here too, I forgot". The hits just kept coming per se.
Before you know it this album is over. It's a classic album turned up a notch with additional energy and sweat poured over the top. If you remotely liked Symbol Of Salvation the studio album, check out Symbol Of Salvation Live.

U.D.O. - Game Over
U.D.O. the band has always been good at releasing new material over the years. There doesn't tend to be anything groundbreaking, and you kind of know what to expect.
And that's fine, I'm not the type of person that needs to compare everything Udo Dirkschneider does to "Balls To The Wall", "Fast As A Shark" or "Restless And Wild". I can appreciate an artist's new music and enjoy it without it having to replace my favorite album by a band.
Tracks like "Fear Detector", "Holy Invaders" and "Prophecy" have slotted in nicely into my U.D.O. playlist. I don't need them to have the most cerebral lyrics, incorporate jazz progressions, or have a million notes played during the solo. I just want to be entertained.
Like most U.D.O. albums there tend to be a bunch of tracks that just stand out above the rest. The others aren't bad by any means, but they're more par for the course. In other words, what you'd expect from the band. Again, nothing wrong with that. Plenty of people will actually like this about Game Over.
As a result, anyone that's a fan of Udo's past work should check the album out. I'm sure more than one track will jump out at you.

The Lucid - The Lucid
I was lucky enough to have Drew Fortier send me "Maggot Wind" the first track off of the album earlier this year. The song instantly caught me by surprise, it sounded like a cool band on paper. But could they pull it off?
The instantly sounded like a mix between Stone Temple Pilots and Badlands to me. Vinnie Dombroski sounded like Ray Gillen in spots, and Scott Weiland in others. Vinnie is best known for fronting Sponge. On The Lucid, Vinnie is a chameleon, he sounds like well Vinnie Dombroski. But he also channels many other influences. Aside from Weilan and Ray Gillen, Layne Stayley also comes to mind.
The band is rounded out by bassist David Ellefson, and drummer Mike Heller who is best known for his work in Fear Factory and Raven. Ellefson seems to be the last piece of the puzzle here.
The album sounds like an amped-up mix between 90s alternative rock, and straight-up hard rock. Filled with angst, hunger, and swagger.
The Lucid sounds sonically great, and the album is solid top to bottom.

Trivium - In The Court Of The Dragon
Trivium is back with album number ten In The Court Of The Dragon. We're well past the stage where they were considered the next big thing. Especially given the fact that Ascendancy, their first big album with "Rain", "Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr" and "A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation" came out all the way back in 2005.
The band has always pushed things musically, while still remaining faithful to what they do. That may sound like a contradiction, but it isn't. They've always pushed themselves musically and known how to pepper in the right amount of clean melodies versus guttural. The right amount of straight-ahead classic heavy metal versus incorporating aspects of death metal. It is all calculated.
In The Court Of The Dragon is no different. When fans were worried they had become too "heavy metal", they came back with blast beats, and incorporated aspects of metal they hadn't touched on before. 2008's Shogun showed fans that Trivium was a metal band that could pull from various types of metal. They demonstrated that as a band they are not just one thing, but an amalgam of several things. In The Court Of The Dragon continues this trajectory.
As I have said many times, the pandemic's silver lining has been that a lot of bands have been able to take time to focus on their music. Trivium has put together an album that is arguably among their strongest. It feels like they really put time into these tracks, and were really developed from a composition standpoint, and sonically. Again, nothing is done without a purpose.
The riffing is on point, the drumming is beyond great, the melodies are such that they will easily get stuck in your head.
If you've remotely been a fan of Trivium in the past, you need to check this album out.

KK's Priest - Sermon Of The Sinner
Word came down a while back that K.K. Downing was reuniting several former members of Judas Priest, and putting his own band together. While Les Binks was originally involved in the band, Tim "Ripper" Owens is the only former member of Priest to be involved in the debut album by KK's Priest called Sermon Of The Sinner.
K.K. has been a metal institution since the 70s. He is just as much a Metal God as the other members of his former band. He helped craft a lot of, if not all of the classic tracks by the band that you've come to love. His dueling solos helped shape metal into what it's become.
I don't get that people have knocked the lyrics of the songs on this album. Let's be honest, what Judas Priest song has mind-numbing, cerebral lyrics that make you think about fighting world hunger or poverty? KK's Priest is writing to an already established audience, that is going to be curious as to what Downing is doing with his new band.
The music is just flat-out entertaining and I have to tell you unless Judas Priest released Firepower, Sermon Of The Sinner would be the best Judas Priest album since Demolition in my opinion. The four singles that were released beforehand are the songs that stand out to me the most.
That said, the album is strong throughout, but it's no Firepower. The last Judas Priest album was an instant classic. The second I heard certain songs off of the album I knew they would automatically get played a ton. To be fair, there are tracks off of this that fall into the same category.
But it isn't to the point where I would say Judas Priest needs K.K. back. Firepower proved that they didn't. But that was a Hail Mary, because Redeemer Of Souls just sounded bad sonically and had very mediocre songs.
I'm already contemplating putting a Judas Priest family playlist together with tracks from all of the bands that are loosely associated with the almighty Judas Priest. KK's Priest, Halford, Fight, 2Wo, maybe some Lauren Harris, who knows!
Every fan of the band should check KK's Priest's Sermon Of The Sinner.
