EXPANDED SHOW NOTES

Signals From Mars - Episode 408: February 2025 Albums Review

Host: Victor M. Ruiz
Guest: Jeremy Weltman
Date: March 7th, 2025

Show Notes

Introduction (00:00 - 04:00)-

Welcome to episode 408 of Signals From Mars.

-

Monthly album review segment with Jeremy Weltman.

-

Overview of February 2025's hard rock and metal releases.

-

Discussion of the importance of keeping up with new music.

-

Discussion of standout albums:

-

Dream Theater - Parisomnia: Concept album focused on sleep and dreams.

-

Ginger - Duel: A solid release but somewhat repetitive.

-

Thundermother - Dirty and Divine: High-energy rock, very AC/DC-influenced.

-

Days of Jupiter - The World Was Never Enough: Jeremy’s pick of the week.

-

Saber - Lost in Flames: Victor’s pick of the week, 80s-inspired heavy metal.

-

Talk about overlooked releases and personal biases in music selection.

-

Lacuna Coil - Sleepless Empire: Victor’s pick of the week, a return to their heavier sound.

-

Crazy Lixx - Thrill of the Bite: Jeremy’s pick of the week, a great glam rock album.

-

Scorpion Child - I Saw the End as It Passed Through Me: New wave of traditional heavy metal sound.

-

Hangman’s Chair - Sedition: Dark, moody, but repetitive.

-

Killswitch Engage - This Consequence: Victor’s pick of the week, strong hooks and polished production.

-

Twins Crew - Chapter 4: Jeremy’s pick of the week, powerful power metal.

-

Air Force - Acts of Madness: Features Doug Samson, sounds like Iron Maiden with a heavier twist.

-

Traitor - Phobias: Strong death metal/thrash vibes.

-

Brainstorm - Plague of Rats: Victor’s album of the month, potential top 10 of the year.

-

Perfect Plan - Heart of a Lion: Jeremy’s pick of the week, great melodic rock.

-

Robin McAuley - Spellbound: Major disappointment, lacks the heaviness of Alive.

-

Dirkschneider - Revisiting Balls to the Wall: Divisive, unnecessary re-record.

-

Tesla confirms no new albums but might release singles.

-

Concerns over the overly polished Shock album produced by Def Leppard’s Phil Collen.

-

General sentiment: If it sounds like old Tesla, yes. If it’s more like Shock, no.

-

Vandenberg playing Whitesnake.

-

Schenker playing UFO.

-

Dirkschneider playing Accept.

-

Verdict: Good for new fans, but re-recordings aren’t necessary.

-

AI Bio Of Erik Kluiber

Introduction

Eric Kluiber is a highly skilled and versatile guitarist known for his work with Society 1, White Wizzard, Gypsyhawk, Void Vater, Overloaded, and several other projects. With a career spanning over two decades, Kluiber has built a reputation for his technical prowess, aggressive playing style, and ability to seamlessly blend elements of heavy metal, hard rock, and classic shred guitar. His contributions to the metal and hard rock scenes have earned him recognition from fans and critics alike, solidifying his place as one of the most talented and dedicated musicians in the genre.

Early Years and Musical Beginnings

Born with a passion for music, Eric Kluiber started playing guitar at an early age. Influenced by guitar legends such as Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Dimebag Darrell, and Zakk Wylde, he quickly developed a distinctive style that combined fast, intricate solos with powerful riffing.

Growing up in the Midwest, Kluiber honed his craft by playing in various local bands and participating in the underground metal scene. His dedication and skill quickly caught the attention of musicians and fans, setting the stage for his professional career in the music industry.

Overloaded: Early Recognition in Hard Rock

One of Eric Kluiber's first major bands was Overloaded, a Detroit-based hard rock outfit that gained a strong following in the mid-2000s. The band’s energetic live performances and heavy-hitting sound helped them carve out a niche in the Midwest rock scene.

Overloaded released several independent recordings, including the well-received album Hail the Kingdom. The album featured powerful tracks like "Feeling Overloaded" and "Heavy Metal Highway," showcasing Kluiber’s sharp guitar work and songwriting abilities.

Breakthrough with White Wizzard

In 2010, Eric Kluiber joined White Wizzard, a Los Angeles-based traditional heavy metal band known for their throwback NWOBHM-inspired sound. His tenure with the band coincided with the release of Over the Top, an album that received critical acclaim for its blend of classic metal influences and modern energy. Tracks like "High Speed GTO" and "Iron Goddess of Vengeance" demonstrated Kluiber’s ability to channel the spirit of 1980s metal while maintaining his own signature style.

Touring extensively with White Wizzard, Kluiber gained valuable experience on the road, performing for audiences across the United States and beyond. His work with the band helped solidify his reputation as a skilled lead guitarist capable of delivering high-energy performances and technical solos.

Joining Gypsyhawk: A New Direction in Hard Rock

After parting ways with White Wizzard, Eric Kluiber became a member of Gypsyhawk, a band that fused elements of classic rock, metal, and blues. Gypsyhawk’s sound drew comparisons to legendary acts like Thin Lizzy, UFO, and Iron Maiden, making them a standout group in the heavy rock scene.

In 2012, the band released Revelry & Resilience, an album that showcased Kluiber’s ability to craft melodic yet heavy riffs. Songs like "Hedgeking" and "Frostwyrm" demonstrated his knack for combining groove-oriented rhythms with blistering leads.

Void Vater: Founding a New Powerhouse

In 2017, Eric Kluiber took his career to the next level by forming Void Vater, a hard-hitting band that blends elements of stoner rock, classic metal, and punk attitude.

The band’s debut EP, Dehumanized (2017), featured standout tracks like "Time Has Come" and "Until It’s Gone," establishing their aggressive yet melodic approach.

In 2021, Void Vater released Great Fear Rising, a full-length album that showcased Kluiber’s most ambitious guitar work to date.

Recent Work with Society 1 and Other Projects

In addition to his work with Void Vater, Eric Kluiber has been an active member of Society 1, an industrial metal band led by the enigmatic Matt Zane. Known for their theatrical stage performances and heavy, groove-laden sound, Society 1 provided Kluiber with a different musical platform to showcase his abilities.

Conclusion

For fans of hard-hitting riffs, intricate solos, and high-energy performances, Eric Kluiber is a name that stands out in the world of heavy music. From his early days with Overloaded to his latest work with Void Vater and Society 1, his contributions to the genre are undeniable.

If you’re a fan of Eric Kluiber’s work, be sure to check out Great Fear Rising, Revelry & Resilience, Over the Top, and Hail the Kingdom—some of the standout albums from his impressive career.

Signals From Mars - Hooligan Nation - Talking Creatures Of The Night

Signals From Mars - Hooligan Nation - Talking Creatures Of The Night

SIGNALS FROM MARS | HOOLIGAN NATION | CREATURES OF THE NIGHT

The Bombastic Return Of Kiss With Creatures Of The Night - Episode 22

Recently I was asked to guest on Hooligan Nation. My fellow Dover natives asked me to discuss my all-time favorite Kiss album, Creatures Of The Night. Creatures is my favorite album by the band and also my favorite album of all time. The title track is also my favorite song of all time.

The Context Behind Creatures of the Night

By the early 1980s, Kiss found themselves at a crossroads. Albums like Dynasty (1979) and Unmasked (1980) had alienated a segment of their hardcore fans who preferred the raw, heavy sound of their earlier records. The experimental pop direction, coupled with internal band conflicts and dwindling ticket sales, forced Kiss to re-evaluate their approach. Furthermore, drummer Peter Criss had been replaced by Eric Carr, and founding guitarist Ace Frehley’s role in the band was increasingly diminished due to personal and professional issues.

Enter Michael James Jackson, the producer who would help Kiss reclaim their hard rock glory. Jackson’s work on Creatures of the Night emphasized a massive, drum-heavy production style, which became the hallmark of the album. Despite being credited on the cover, Ace Frehley did not contribute significantly to the recording. Instead, a host of guest guitarists, including Steve Farris, Robben Ford, and Vinnie Vincent, filled the void, with Vincent eventually joining Kiss as the new lead guitarist.

The Album’s Sound: A Hard Rock Revival

Creatures of the Night is often hailed as one of the heaviest Kiss albums. The album’s sound is dominated by Eric Carr’s thunderous drumming and the guitar work that combines aggression with melody. The production’s clarity and power were a stark contrast to the polished pop of their recent releases. It was clear that Kiss wanted to send a message: they were back to rocking harder than ever.

Track-by-Track Analysis

Let’s dive into the 9 tracks that make up Creatures of the Night.

1. "Creatures of the Night"

The opening title track sets the tone with a fierce riff, booming drums, and Paul Stanley’s commanding vocals. The lyrics explore themes of nocturnal allure and mystery, making it an anthem for rock enthusiasts. The track’s raw energy captures Kiss’s renewed spirit.

2. "Saint and Sinner"

Sung by Gene Simmons, this mid-tempo rocker showcases his gritty voice and a darker lyrical theme. The bassline complements the pounding drums, creating a moody atmosphere that contrasts with the explosive opener.

3. "Keep Me Comin’"

Paul Stanley takes the mic again on this groove-laden track. With a swaggering rhythm and sultry lyrics, it combines hard rock attitude with a bluesy edge, reminiscent of Zeppelin-esque influences.

4. "Rock and Roll Hell"

Co-written with Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, this track features Simmons’ introspective side. The lyrics depict the struggles of fame and the desire to escape. The slower tempo allows for a more contemplative vibe while still maintaining the album’s heaviness.

5. "Danger"

Paul Stanley’s high-energy vocals take center stage on this fast-paced rocker. The infectious chorus and driving rhythm make "Danger" a standout track that epitomizes Kiss’s reinvigorated sound.

6. "I Love It Loud"

Arguably the album’s most iconic track, "I Love It Loud" became a staple of Kiss’s live shows. Gene Simmons delivers a bombastic performance, while Eric Carr’s drumbeat—a tribal stomp—is unforgettable. The anthemic chorus is tailor-made for audience participation.

7. "I Still Love You"

A power ballad that showcases Paul Stanley’s emotional range, "I Still Love" You features heartfelt lyrics and a hauntingly beautiful melody. This track demonstrates Kiss’s ability to balance heavy rock with introspection and sensitivity.

8. "Killer"

Gene Simmons returns with a ferocious vocal performance. The song’s aggressive guitar riffs and fast-paced energy make it a fan favorite for those craving Kiss’s heavier side.

9. "War Machine"

Closing the album with a bang, "War Machine" is a menacing track co-written with Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. The heavy riffing and apocalyptic lyrics give it a dark, theatrical edge, solidifying it as one of the album’s most memorable songs.

Critical Reception and Legacy

Upon its release, Creatures of the Night received mixed commercial success, peaking at #45 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. However, it found a more enthusiastic audience in countries like Brazil and Australia, where Kiss remained immensely popular. Over time, the album’s critical reputation grew significantly. Many fans and critics now regard it as one of Kiss’s finest efforts, praising its unapologetic return to hard rock.

The album’s legacy is further bolstered by its enduring tracks like "I Love It Loud" and "War Machine", which continued to be featured in Kiss’s live performances. The 1985 reissue of Creatures of the Night with a new cover—featuring the lineup without makeup—only added to the album’s mystique.

The Importance of Eric Carr

Creatures of the Night also marks the first Kiss album to fully showcase Eric Carr’s drumming prowess. Carr brought a heavier, more dynamic style to the band, which significantly influenced the album’s sound. Tracks like I Love It Loud and War Machine exemplify his contributions, making him a fan-favorite drummer in Kiss history.

Why Creatures of the Night Still Matters

Four decades later, Creatures of the Night remains a testament to Kiss’s resilience and adaptability. It represents a band that refused to fade into obscurity and instead doubled down on their strengths. The album’s bold production, powerful songwriting, and heavier direction helped pave the way for Kiss’s resurgence in the 1980s.

For new listeners, Creatures of the Night serves as an ideal entry point into Kiss’s discography. It bridges the raw energy of their early years with the polished professionalism that defined their later work. For longtime fans, it’s a reminder of the band’s ability to overcome adversity and deliver music that stands the test of time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Creatures of the Night is more than just an album; it’s a landmark moment in Kiss’s career and a hard rock classic that continues to inspire generations of music lovers. Whether you’re rediscovering it or hearing it for the first time, this album deserves a place in your playlist. From the anthemic "I Love It Loud" to the haunting "I Still Love You", Creatures of the Night delivers a listening experience that’s as powerful today as it was in 1982.

For fans of hard rock, classic rock albums, and the enduring legacy of Kiss, Creatures of the Night is essential listening. Don’t miss out on the chance to explore one of the greatest comeback stories in rock history. Share your thoughts below and let us know your favorite track from this iconic album!
